PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – The recent surge in COVID-19 cases is causing delays in curbside pickup of yard debris and waste for Port St. Lucie residents. The City’s contracted hauler, Waste Pro, is experiencing a higher-than-usual number of employees out sick or quarantining. Additionally, the company has been dealing with a shortage of drivers, which has become a nationwide trend over the past 18 months.
To reduce the strain on residents, Waste Pro has started altering some routes. While scheduled service days will remain the same, trucks may come earlier in the day or even the following day. Having waste curbside by 7 a.m. on scheduled collection days and leaving it there until it’s collected will help avoid service delays.
City officials are in daily communication with Waste Pro and are closely monitoring the service level to provide some relief efforts, while ensuring the delays do not become egregious.
“One of the unexpected outcomes of the pandemic has been the popularity of the City’s first residential drop-off center, located on Crosstown Parkway at Cameo Boulevard, for bulky waste and vegetation,” said Neighborhood Service Director Carmen Capezzuto. “While not ideal for some, the option of disposing bulk waste and vegetation on your own schedule has been a tremendous hit for thousands of residents over the past several months.”
There are things residents can do to lessen the chance of experiencing a service delay:
- If your yard waste, garbage or recycling is not picked up on your regularly scheduled day, you can leave it out the following day; most delayed collections are recovered the next day.
- Containerize as much waste as possible, which includes bagging or containerizing yard waste to reduce the number of clam piles. This will reduce the chance of your pile being left behind.
